If you are looking for a quick fix of WOW!! Then look no further.

Harriniva has an enviable Northern Lights record and a wonderful selection of activities which means it is the ideal place for a wilderness weekend with a distinct Northern Lights focus.

During your weekend we combine two of the most exciting Lapland activities both of which rather conveniently offer excellent opportunities to witness the Aurora should conditions be right.

The absolute highlight of this action-packed short break is the overnight husky safari. Over two days you will drive your own team of huskies across frozen lakes and through the vast snowy forests that cover Lapland. There are few better ways to totally distance yourself from your everyday life than this. You’ll be going right back to basics in a wilderness cabin, chopping wood for the fire and collecting water from the lakes or streams for cooking purposes. The cabins are situated in remote destinations well away from any light pollution and so they offer exceptional opportunities for witnessing the Aurora at its very best.

When you return to Harriniva there is a little time for you to relax and reflect on what you have just done before you head out in search of the Northern Lights, this time using horse power rather than paws as you explore by snowmobile.

You can combine this holiday with our four night Northern Lights Quest for an unforgettable adventure (operated Sunday to Sunday) with direct flights from the UK. Please contact us for a quotation and we will be happy to arrange everything for you.

Suitable for

Anybody aged 18 years or over.  (For some activities there maybe participants as young as 15 years old).

Itinerary

Day 1: Flights, arrival and transfers
You will fly into Kittila Airport from where you will be transferred to Harriniva. After you have checked in to your cosy room dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant. You will need to get a relatively early night tonight in preparation for your adventure tomorrow but remember to keep your eye out for nature’s light show before you hit the hay.

Day 2: Overnight husky safari
After breakfast you will meet with your guide and walk over to the Arctic Sled Dog Centre. You will be provided with all the equipment you need, full instruction on how to control a team and then it’s time to get acquainted with the huskies.

The dogs will be making quite a racket as they are so excited to be on the trail but thankfully they soon fall silent as you release the brake and they focus on doing what they love best – pulling the sled.

There are few better ways to enjoy the winter landscapes than from a sled and the silence is broken only by the sound of the dogs’ panting and the sled’s runners swishing along the trail.

You will cover around 20-25km per day depending on conditions making your way through snowy forests and across frozen lakes and rivers. Everyone will be responsible for looking after their own team of dogs and helping out with the chores at the wilderness cabin. The cabins can be basic (no running water or electricity) but they really let you escape everyday life and get back to basics.

The cabins are all located in remote locations away from any artificial light so hopefully all you will see in the sky is the magnificent Aurora Borealis.

Day 3: Husky safari to Harriniva and Aurora snowmobile safari
The excited dogs will ensure that you are woken nice and early and back on the trail as soon as possible. You will again travel around 20km on the way back to the Sled Dog Centre.

Back at the hotel there will be time for a shower, dinner and the chance to reflect briefly before you head out on a very different form of transport, a snowmobile.

Full instruction will be provided and your experienced guide will take you to a wonderful viewpoint (travelling around 20km in total) where the views of the sky are uninterrupted and hopefully the Aurora will grace you with its presence.

Day 4: Depart or extend your stay
Today you will head back to Kittila for your flight home. Alternatively you can extend your stay at Harriniva and try some additional activities or spend the night at Torassieppi Winter Village.

ACCOMMODATION

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of northwest Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

The Bedrooms
The hotel has 64 ensuite hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from the Reception.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around 3 hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the Reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food – ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a lovely little place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an Aurora alarm which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre which is situated on the river bank and offers a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at Reception. There are no cash points available on site.

Igloo
An overnight stay in an igloo is a truly memorable experience and has proved very popular with our past guests. The igloos (which are more like mini igloo hotels) are generally situated a short walk from the hotel and have snow rooms decorated with special lighting and carved decorations and sculptures. The number of rooms and the interior design can vary each season.

The indoor temperature of these igloos is between -5 and -10 degrees Celsius so you will sleep in arctic-grade sleeping bags to keep you nice and warm. Your bedroom within the hotel is also kept for you in case you wish to retreat indoors during the night.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in with collecting water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know them at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits.

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in Arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.
