Itinerary

Your Husky Sled Adventurer break begins with a flight from your chosen UK airport to Kiruna in Northern Sweden. From here, you will make the 2 hour transfer to Karesuando - a spectacular journey, travelling through the majestic forests and passing countless frozen lakes. The charming village of Karesuando will then be the base for your Arctic adventure, from where you will venture out on the exciting activities detailed below before flying back from Kiruna.

We’ll organise the running order according to the local conditions while you’re there so a set itinerary will be provided at a later date. You will also have the opportunity to choose from our programme of optional excursions: maybe try your hand at snowmobiling or spend a night in an igloo – a definite highlight of our Arctic Spirit programmes!

Northern Lights Husky Safari

Duration: Two hours

Take a magical evening safari on a sledge pulled by a team of dogs, hopefully travelling under the beautiful Northern Lights (of course, this cannot be guaranteed). Two adults share a sled and dog team.

Full Day Husky Sled Adventure

Duration: Full Day

Travelling through the snow-clad forest with your dog team, you will arrive at a reindeer reserve. Here you will linger long enough to learn about the secrets of reindeer herding. Continuing further you will stop for warming lunch amid the wilderness, before returning to the husky farm, where your dogs will at last enjoy a well-earned rest and perhaps a treat or two!

Accommodation

Davvi Arctic Lodge

The Davvi Arctic Lodge is one of the most popular Arctic hotels that we offer. Exclusive to Transun, this traditional hotel is set in a quiet, secluded hillside location.

It offers guests a range of accommodation options including rooms, cabins and 2-3 bedroom Fell Houses for larger groups. In addition to these cosy and traditional options the hotel has recently launched the Aurora House offering designer accommodation for those who are looking for something extra special.

Arctic Star Hotel

The Arctic Star is a simple and traditional hotel situated on the outskirts of the small border-village of Swedish Karesuando, with superb views over both the majestic Muonio River and the Kaarevaara fell.

It’s a simple and comfortable hotel, drawing on local architectural styles and materials, especially Scandinavian pine. We think you’ll enjoy this traditional retreat, it is a great base for a winter adventure in Lapland.

Dog Sledding Video:

About Husky Safari Holidays

Dog power has been used for hunting and travel for over a thousand years. As far back as the 10th century these dogs have contributed to human culture.

Assembling a dog sled team involves picking leader dogs, point dogs, swing dogs, and wheel dogs. The lead dog is crucial so mushers take particular care of these dogs. Important too is to have powerful wheel dogs to pull the sled out from the snow. Point dogs (optional) are located behind the leader dogs, swing dogs between the point and wheel dogs, and team dogs are all other dogs in between the wheel and swing dogs and are selected for their endurance, strength and speed as part of the team. In dog sledding Siberian Huskies or Alaskan malamutes are the main types of dogs that are used for recreational sledding, because of their attractive looks and willingness to work. However, Alaskan Huskies are the most popular breed for sled dog racing, because of their endurance, good eating habits, speed, and dedication to running even when tired.
